I will start by saying that "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov has been my favorite book at least 5 years now (that says a lot since I read quite a bit!).

I have moved from Europe to United States in 2005. Do not know yet for how long but most definitely for few years. I graduated First Independent University in Poland in... more »

I think I'm going to make it a New Year's Resolution to learn Russian. I'm going to ask for the Rosetta Stone language system for Christmas. It's supposed to be great. Apparently there are a lot of older Russian men working on the fifth floor of my building, so my friend asked one of them if he'd be willing to talk with me about Russian literature and practice when I start to learn.

I'm curious where you are from in Europe. Are you Russian/do you speak Russian? I desperately want to learn how to speak and read Russian so that I can read Tolstoy and Dostoyevski in their own lanugage. I'm goign to start teaching myself, but I could use someone who will converse with me. That's half the battle of learning a language.

Oh, also, I went to buy the Master and Margerita last month, on your recommendation. I can't remember if i told you. I didn't buy it because of the cat on the cover, but I'm going to order a different copy if I can.

    Greetings Isis,
Thank you for the note. As soon as I have time I'll check out your shelf too. Right now I'm in the middle of a family crisis. My sister's husband has advanced lung cancer and he just suffered a perferated bowel. Soooo. . . my husband and I are taking care of 4 dogs plus my own, two rabbits, three birds, one cat and a five year old niece who has ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder! What a handful! I swear 24/7 noise could be a real torture!

I have tremendous admiration for my sister and her husband. They adopted this child after they rescued her from the streets when she was an infant. The mother was a prostitute and a substance abuser. They knew the child would probably have some difficulties. What courage and compassion! And my brother-in-law isn't young either. . . he is 57 years old coping with a 5 year old!

I'll be glad to return to my own home for some quiet. . .until my sister should need me again. She cries and I taste the salt, so I'll always be available for her.
    Cheers,
    The Poet

Received one of those inscrutable, note-less, fly-by-night friend invites that I'm always getting on my Shelfari Home, and went to the shelf of the inviter. Saw you, a fellow invitee, and I just wanted to pop in and offer a hearty amen to your comment: "There are a million other websites for making friends. Shelfari is strictly for booklovers. " It seems as though about 25,000 people think this is just another Myspace, the one to decorate with Harry Potter covers. It bugs me.
