Gullu, kya din the na woh bhi...
ages since u scrapped me on shelfari...:(
purchased a Hardy Boys while in Delhi yesterday ;-)
a bit of longing in her eyes?nah...........i like her the way she is.any longing would have decreased her dignity....well, hermione would have to top the list as far as fav. characters go in HP.mcgonagall is a close second.and i rather like luna and lupin too.....and yes, dumbledore.thats a long list!!;-)
ya, mcgonagall does not seem to be a romantic person..but if she was in love with dumbledore and knew it was a hopeless case, that would make her a little uptight, wont it?and tahts exactly how she comes across!i have been very very lazy and very busy at the same time..which translates as---i have a lot of work to do, and keep meaning to do them, but somehow never get around to actually doing them!! ;-)
your enthusiasm is so infectious!! i love Hp the way you do...right there with you. it is a very stupid notion that children's fiction is for children alone. i think it was CS Lewis who said that no children's fiction is good enough that cannot be nejoyed equally by adults....something to that effect anyways.....rowling's imagination is brilliant......true.and i love her artistry...many say they dont find much literary merit in her works....well, they must be blind is all i say!!
hey heyilikeit!!you did not share your thoughts on my lengthy notes you know?!just wonderin'............
and hw bt "Animal Farm"? hv heard such a whole lot bt it...
hv u read "A Tale of Two Cities"...how is it? never got arnd to it...n considering its a Dickens, thats a huge miss!
hv u read "The Importance of being Earnest" and any of Ogden Nash's poems? Should...
jackie and hydie on....my shelf! :D
and oh, sorry i did not get your point about dumbledore being of leftist lineage, but i think sexuality is a deeply political issue, as all gender oppression must be.....
hmm i too must read malgudi days later..as for HP and rowling and dumbledore....i am an avid reader of the series.love it love it love it...and i think rowling is a genius....she makes some very deep observations in her stories....and she deserves to be celebrated....as for dumbledore being gay....i am glad you asked me that...this might sound difficult but here it is...i am staunchly against any discrimination on the basis of gender (non)identities....put simply, that means that i am an ardent feminist and very anti-homophobic, and anti-heterosexist. so, dumbledore being gay comes as a sort of relief for me, because you see, i thought rowling was omitting something very crucial from her fiction when she did not make any of her major characters gay.....that to me, was a blatant distortion of reality....but some people might argue that she does not represent dumbledore being gay enough....the debate can rage on that point. but to say that she is way out of line on this is merely stupid. i just hope she had also prepared the grounds to say that minerva mcgonagall was gay too.....;-) but it seems likely that mcgonagall was just as much in love with dumbledore as he was with grindelwald.....but that is totally my supposition.....and i would believe it as long as rowling does not contradict me!!!bye.
compare the two:1. ...move to greener pastures...2. ...move to pastures new, greener perhaps...doesnt the 2nd have eloquence and wit?Courtesy: Yes Minister (dont miss it! Watch it if u can...has the classical British purist Englist and humor revolving around it.)
Tommy and Tuppence, cute na....! YES.Curtain is Poirot's Last case.THAT MUST B INTERESTING...WD LUK FWD TO IT.'Endless night' doesn't hv any detective.Similar to 'Mary Westmacott ' type books.OH! HUMAN PSYCHE? OR JUST A NON-POIROT NON-MARPLE DETECTIVE??:-) btw, if u can ever lay ur hands on Len Deighton's Goodbye Mickey Mouse, grab it! U'll fall in luv with it.
Planning to purchase 2 of the 3 Agathas that u recommended "Curtain" nd "Endless Night" (hv read The Secret Adversary) and read Mockingbird and Catch-22 as well for my 10 day sojourn back home. Are they Miss Marple or Poirot mysteries?
french classes going on fine...i dont like r k narayan at all.....read four novels by him...the english teacher, guide, bachelor of arts and swami and friends.the last is undoubtedly the best.....but i find him very boring.and he has taken upon himself so consciously the task of presenting "india" to the non-indians that i feel very irritated as an indian reader....
I guess...hadnt thought of it that way.
i went back and saw you had asked about indian authors, and not indian authors who write in english.....but that is a looooooooooooong answer to give.have grown up on bengali lit.....so that would top my list...there are so many favourites there that i cannot even pick a stray name.....but among contemporary authors who write in bangla, i like reading tilottama majumder a lot....
ya, hosseini was on my shelf long before i read it...among current indian authors who write in english, i like rohinton mistry very much...also amitav ghosh.arundhati roy's sole novel is a masterpiece....salman rushdie's midnight's children was excruciatingly difficult to read for me(read it when i was 18....without any literary training whatsoever!)...but his non-fiction is a pleasure to read...especially imaginary homelands...am currently reading vikram chandra(red earth and puring rain).....seems fascinating so far.have read only one anita desai, and hated it...(voices in the city)...but i must go back to her later..and i absolutely adore the poetry of kamala das...
