HemingwayHeroine

I love to read. I am extremely passionate about all things literary. There is nothing in this world that I get more excited about than books. Finally being done with my school years means there aren't a lot of people around who want to discuss books with me. Actually, most people find it annoying when I get all worked up about something I'm...more »

I think it was an interesting concept that wasn't well executed. There was some pretty good writing in there and he made some characters you were invested in, but there was no resolution, no answers to the questions he poses and it was just too dark for me. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm too much of a purist when it comes to those books I think; I'm a little interested in The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, however.

I know people who've read Rand and I know some about her life and the premise of a few of her books, but I've never read her. Part of me wants to read one of her books just so I have some sort of legitimate foundation upon which to base my opinion of her and her philosophy and another part says that life is too short to spend it reading books I'll probably end up kicking myself for reading. You'll have to tell me more when you finish it, or as you read it...whichever.

That's cool, it's gonna take me a while to get through The Poisonwood Bible, and I'll be on vacation for part of July, so that'll make it take a little big longer also. How do you like Ayn Rand so far?

By the way, I'm thinking back to that comment I left about Wicked and I'm feeling kinda bad about not being more tactful in my criticism of it. Sorry, I sometimes don't think before I say (type) things.

I got up to the beginning of “The Mammoth Hunters” and put the series down. I may finish it someday, because I really loved “Clan of the Cave Bear.” The second book was enjoyable as well, but I actually felt embarrassed by some of the scenes in “The Mammoth Hunters.” I don’t think I’m a prude, but it definitely earns your “prehistoric p*rn” tag (henceforth known as “PP” =P).

Ah. He's a very talented and fairly versatile author. He's mostly written sci-fi (his most famous novel is Ender's Game), but he's also written some adult fiction, fantasy, historical fiction and re-interpreted a few fairy tales. He's also written some non-fiction on Mormonism and writing.

Haha! DeWinter! I'm sure it's credible, but DeWinter is always how I've heard it (I don't know which edition of The Three Muskateers my sister read) so I assumed that was the correct translation. No biggie.

Well...I'm trying to think...I'm planning on reading "Treasure Island" again (I've only read it once and that many moons ago) after I finish The Poisonwood Bible. Have you read that? I'm also going to read The Host and Breaking Dawn when it comes out. Maybe we could look at eachother's 'Plan To Read' list and come up with something.

Have you read any Orson Scott Card? It's one of his earlier novels and it's interesting but ultimately just long, disturbing and without redemption.
So far in Poisonwood Bible I'm very worried about what's going to happen and have a very strong dislike for the father bordering on hatred. Leah seems somewhat likeable but a little unsympathetic when it comes to how she views her family. I just started the Adah chapter and I like her quite a bit. She's like a beat poet or something. I feel sorry for Rachel, I have a feeling she's going to have something unpleasant happen to her before too long and Ruth seems disturbingly indoctrinated. But, I'm only to the, like, 3rd or 4th chapter, so we'll have to see what happens.

This was my note on Now I Lay Me by Hemingway.
I am still plugging away with the short story collection.
This seems to be the middle story of three Nick Adams' stories. The first is "A Way You'll Never Be" is the young Nick just back from the war. "Now I Lay Me" is Nick remembering when he could not sleep during a night behind the front lines. "The Big Two Hearted River" is of course Nick back home fishing after the war. They were written between 1924 and 1933. The Volunteer is not named Nick Adams in "Now I Lay Me" but it is probably Nick. Of course, Nick dreams of fishing which is a postscript to the Big-Hearted river story. Hemingway seems to regard his fishing trips as an escape from reality. "I had different way of occupying myself while I lay awake. I would think of a trout stream I had fished along when I was a boy and fish its whole length very carefully in my mind; fishing very carefully under all the logs, all the turns of the bank, the deep holes and the clear shallow stretches, sometimes catching trout and sometimes losing them. I would stop fishing at noon to eat my lunch; sometimes on a log over the stream; sometimes on a high bank under a tree, and I always ate my lunch very slowly and watched the stream below me while I ate.... Some nights too I made up streams, and some of them were very exciting, and it was like being awake and dreaming. Some of those streams I still remember and think that I have fished in them, and they are confused with streams I really know." Thus, Hemingway almost gives fishing a supernatural mystical quality.
I could never stand fishing. It always seems so boring but I guess for some people it has its appeal

I stopped by your shelf to check out your latest updates and got a kick out of your targs for Clan of the Cave Bear. I only got up to the beginning of the third book in that series before I just got too embarassed to continue reading. =P It's good to know the rest of the series is still waiting for me when I want a guilty pleasure though.

    Happy Reading!
