Denis, I enjoyed your review. We agreed on everything except the overall ratings we gave the book. My review is one or two reviews after yours.

For Wither, we have the following ratings: 8.5, 7.5, 7 & 6 = 7.2. Lynette hasn't rated it yet - she's still reading it but doesn't seem enthused about it.

You're welcome. And feel free. I've got a lot more to add, but this is great since I've been needing a way to catalog my collection anyway. I have several book sites I'm part of, but this one is pretty streamlined and lets me separate better. I don't know how many books I have, but I know I fill 5 bookshelves.

Yes, it does make sense. I think you would have liked to see the author tell some about interspecies competition, maybe. And we certainly do compete to a certain extent, as well as use one another. But for the purposes of this book, I believe that Pollan was concentrating on how plants use man.

Hey Denis -- I was thinking randomly about The Botany of Desire the other day, when I had a sudden insight. I think I might be able to clarify your objection to the book as it pertains to the competition of species in their fight to survive. I think you took Pollan's words on that subject to mean that plants and people compete. What the author actually meant was that plants compete with other PLANTS to survive, and in order to do this, certain plants take advantage of people to help them get ahead. They do this by satisfying man's different desires: for sweetness, intoxication, beauty and control. If that doesn't help, then I give up!

Aha! You changed your persona. I read your review and noted we are friends but was thinking -- Who IS this joker? (ha ha) I see that Sally reacted the same way. I dunno, you look pretty creepy to me ... Justin is talking about maybe coming to this meeting. We shall see! He likes Riordan. It WAS fun reading about SA, huh?

Hey Denis! I just read some of your review of "American Psycho". I have it on my TBR list. I'll have to "bump it up" on that list! Sally

I think that's it. The person who first mentioned this site was a potential Readers' Circle member who never came to a meeting. But the last I checked, she had not been active on Shelfari since 2007. Seems like her name was QCatie or something like that. Would be fun to get more involved.

Sally has a group on Shelfari having to do with local book discussion groups. Not many people contribute to it. The active group discussions on Shelfari usually take LOTS of prodding from the moderators to keep going. It might be fun to start up a limited discussion on one of our books just to see what people might have to add. If it seemed worth it, we could give discussing our books here a go, but someone will almost certainly have to prod group members into contributing.

WELCOME!! Good to see you here. If you post on Readers' Circle books, this will give me a chance to cheat a little. I usually peek at Sally's reviews, but save my comments until meeting time. Enjoyed Saturday's discussion and getting to know Kathy better.
