Adica?
In almost all the translated books this has been the main problem: archaic language. Well the english translator of notes.. himself confesses that Russian has more ability to show creativity and intesity than English and thats why some of the portions are impossible to translate with equal effect. I was little disappointed to hear. What about Romaninan translations? Are they also subject to same side effects? Of course i will let you know once i have read it.
how did you like notes from underground? In which language you read and who was the translator?
After going through your shelf and the tags, such as french existetialism, the only thing i could make out was you were kidding :). I warrant you not only are just aquinted with the term but know a good deal about it. Are there any Romanian exitentialists also?
Yes both André Gide and André Malraux are considered as existentialists. If you like their books you can proudly call yourself an existentialist although classifying yourself in itself defies the very definition of it . :) I have not read either of them. Also, i have started a group 'existentialism' come and let us know about their magnum opuses.
If you can't find "Brás Cubas", "Dom Casmurro" is another good introduction to Machado de Assis. Can you recommend me some good Romanian authors too?
Machado de Assis is probably our most celebrated author (along with Guimarães Rosa). His novels are amazing. Harold Bloom pays hommage to him from time to time and director Woody Allen learned Portuguese only to read the original work. I recommend "Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas", frequently translated as "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas" in English. It's a book from late 19th whose narrator is a witty and dead gentleman!http://www.shelfari.com/books/154260/The-Posthumous-Memoirs-of-Bras-Cubas-(Library-of-Latin-America)Paulo Coelho, our "Paul Rabbit", by the way, n'est pas grand-chose ...You're right: I'll add some books to my shelf, it's nearly empty!
You're Romanian! How does it feel to live in the country that gave birth to Cioran and Tzara? It must be amazing!Best regards from Brazil
