As an author of a paranormal romance book, I enjoy reading and writing within this subgenre. I've read many different authors in this genre and many books. Some of my favorite authors are Lynsay Sands, Christine Feehan, J. R. Ward, J. R. Rain, and of course Charlene Harris. I also adore reading time travel romances and political books as well. I've been an avid reader most of my life. Although my taste in books has changed over the years, my desire to read has not.
My pet peeves when reading romance books:
1. Books that leave you hanging and force you to buy the next in the series. It may be a great marketing strategy, but it really bugs me. I like closure. I love series that carry over characters and allow each book to stand on its own. Series that make it difficult for you to read book five, if you haven't read book four, turn me off. Sometimes, I will fall in love with a series - but more often than not - I prefer closure.
2. Filler. Yep, I love bits of historical data and description thrown into a book to give it an authentic feel; however, when authors add details that are pure fluff and seem added to get to a the publisher's page count requirement, it bores me. I don't care if the author found out intriguing facts about Robert the Bruce or how women dealt with menstruation in the middle ages, if it is not pertinent to the main characters. I read romances because I want to see a man and woman develop a relationship. I want to see those characters evolve, interact, and live within the setting. Wild tangents that take me too far from my hero and heroine cause me to start skipping pages.
What I adore about romance books:
1. I love character driven stories. I enjoy reading about each character and how their lives entwine. I like confict but not so much that we end up with the conflict driving the story.
2. I adore sensual, passionate, romantic scenes. They don't have to be explicit, but I'm not offended by explicit sex scenes either. I do want to see my hero and heroine entwined in sheets, or hay, or whatever tickles their fancy.
3. Strong, leading men that have a flaw intrigue me. I don't want perfect men, but men that adore women. I like to see the characters work through their flaws or come to accept them. A male lead that finds himself tongue tied or confused by his love interest's responses is compelling and feels more realistic.
