I was born seeking a spiritual life, and around 20 years old (1974) I began formal meditation & yoga, and then teaching these around 1976. Later discovering Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology, these helped round out my spiritual life. I was recognized as a monk (swami or sanyasi) in 1990 by my guru in his ashram in Uttarkashi in the Himalayas. I published two books by my grandfather guru, Swami Shankar Purushottam Tirtha (Yoga Vani: Instructions for the Attainment of Siddhayoga; & Guru Bani: 100 Ways to Attain Inner Peace), then spent 6 years writing the Ayurveda Encyclopedia. The first edition came out in 1998 and 2nd edition in 2007 (now 20,000 copies in print). Over the years I have been invited to speak at the President's Commission on Complementary & Alternative Medicine & John Hopkins University to name a few.
At my student's request for a Bhagavad Gita commentary that made Krishna's teachings relevant to daily life, I wrote a commentary in 2007 - Bhagavad Gita for Modern Times.
In 2007 I relocated upstate NY to be more in communion with nature and have a place people could visit and heal and grow their spiritual life. In 2008 I earned a scholarship to visit shamans in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest through the Pachamama Alliance. There two shaman recognized me as a shaman. And since then, shaman healing teachings are being downloaded through meditation, helping me offer more quick and effective healing as it is integrated with Ayurveda & meditation.
