I'm French Canadian and read mostly in English. Most of all, I love reading in the bathtub in the winter and in the pool in the summer.

I also listen to a lot of books on CDs on my iPod when I take walks, relax by the water, in bed and when I fly.

I never go anywhere without a book, a magazine or my iPod.

Bonjour enore Claie, Il etait un vrai plaisir voir un message de vous aujourd'hui. I am sure I am murdering a fine language!

I have read "The Messenger" by Silva and recall enjoying it - I did read a review a while back on "Moscow Rules" and made a mental note to read it. After your recommendation I'll act on that note! Update - went online to our library and have a hold on the book for when it becomes due on the 8tth. Never read Flynn - sounds like I need to jump an my bicycle and get down to the library! Lately I've been on a "Asia" kick I suppose reading a book on Genghis Khan, The Silk Road, and now Marco Polo - I should switch to a few good action fiction books for a while. A really funny coincidence - just after I put down the Genhis Khan book I got a call asking me if I would do a project in Mongolia advising the government there on financial management software - while I do have a yen to travel I have to admit I was grateful nothing come of that idea! A week in Ula'an Bator before November would have been my limit!

Amitav Ghosh has just come out with a new book - I read his "Glass Palace" and enjoyed it more than any book I can recall in years. The new book is the first of a trilogy so I'll get it soon.

Just back from a hiking (plus eating & drinking!) trip to the SW USA and off to Belize scuba diving in early December while this old body can still make it!

    For now - Martin

It has been a long time — a year. Joseph Finder belongs in the same category as Flynn and Silva. There's also a new John Le Carre.

    Keep in touch.

    Hi Claire,

Just got back from Hawaii. Had a wonderful trip.
Sunsets, rainbows, waterfalls, mountains, laying by pool, reading, ice cream (the best in Hawaii) great restaurants, fruit was so delicious, shopping, friends. Pure Heaven!!!!
I really needed that vacation. Now comes the hard busy months ahead.

I read 6 books on my trip.. what fun. I had to buy some reading material for the trip home! Really thought I brought enough books but had so much time to read, I took advanatage of it.

I hope your well my friend. Take care, Carol

Thanks so much for the note. I have been a slug of an on-line friend over the past few months. Have been on the road for work almost full time and am glad to have a quiet weekend at home. It sounds like you and your daughter are lucky to be close enough to travel together. I have two sons that I love dearly but always thought it would be neat to have an adult daughter to shop with!
Do you have any other travels planned? We are going on a fun little 3 day cruise out of Port Canaveral with two other couples. Going to Bahamas. I have been there a couple of times, but it is really more about the cruise time than the destination.

I just finished The Dress Lodger. A dark book but very good. About a prostitute in England in the 1830s during the cholera epidemic. Strangely enough, I picked up an audio by Tess Gerritson, The Bone Garden. It is about the same time period but is set in Boston. Both books are centered around resurectionists, who dig up bodies so that doctors could study anatomy.

I enjoyed Kindness of Strangers alot. Read it for the GroupReads group here on Shelfari.

I moved into the digital age and bought an MP3 player to listen to books while at the gym. Our library now allows books to be downloaded. Unfortunately, you can only keep them for one week, and then they expire. (How do they do that?). You can only re-check them out again onto your computer if no one else wants the book. Most books are over 12 hours in length and I just can't get it done in 7 days, so I am hoping that I will be able to get the book again. Sure is nicer than lugging around CDs at the gym. (besides I feel "old and out of touch"!

    What are you reading?

    Hi Claire-
thanks for the invite. I look forward to discussions about our favorite reads. I, like you, take a book with me everywhere I go. I travel for work so I have plenty of reading opportunities on airplanes and in hotel rooms.

    Claire,
It was so nice hearing from you. This summer has been so busy that I neglected keeping up with my friends on Shelfari.

Your summer sounded wonderful to me. I wish I had a quiet one....Keep me posted on your trips.
Would love to hear where you will be going.

Hubby and I are going to Hawaii in Oct. (14-20)
That should be a grand trip. Can't wait!

Like you, I haven't read anything that will knock your socks off...some good ones but nothing super. If I do, I will let you know.

    Keep in touch,

    Hi Claire!
I have been an awful on-line friend lately, but for the right reason! Just got back from an Alaskan cruise. We had a wonderful time. Also got to go to your country for the first time - even though a long way from you. The ship stopped in Victoria, and we got way too few hours there. I think I would love to go back there. After we returned to Seattle, Jim and I drove up to Vancouver. Enjoyed it, but didn't get out of the city enough. They are really getting ready for the Olympics. It was interesting to watch the closing ceremonies from China while in Canada. We make such a big deal over our large Team USA - Canada's is smaller, but everyone is so proud! I reminded Jim that he owes me a trip to Quebec City during a Christmas season - I have kept the beautiful pictures you send me and he saw them too. It seems like a fairy tale.

Got to read alot, as the day we returned to Georgia, I had to pack and go to Phoenix, AZ, the next day. Lots of airplane time - even though I remain a little jet lagged. Have you read anything by Elizabeth Berg? I picked up one of her books on the ship, and OH MY - I fell in love with her writing.

I am just starting Elizabeth George's new book, Careless in Red. I have read all her books. She is not English, but writes about British detectives. I always enjoy her books.

Again, I am sorry I have been such a poor friend lately! What are you reading these days? Anything I can't live without?

Likewise Claire - I have Divisadero waiting for me in the public library - perhaps I'll try a Daniel Silva after I read that. Worth it in your opinion? À bientôt aussi, Martin.

    Hi Claire,

Had a marvelous Vegas trip. Did not win millions but came home with some money.
Saw the show "Love" Beatles music and loved it.
Every restaurant we went to was fabulous -
You would have been in heaven. A Thai restaurant,a French, Mario Batella's, Spago's (Wolfgang Puck's) and Aquaknot at the Venetian.
Everyone of them - SUPERB! You can't be on a
diet when you go to Vegas!!!

Bought some knock out jewelry for myself, goodies for the whole family etc.
Read 4 books (can't gamble all day!) and took some afternoon naps. All wonderful!

Hope you and the family are well. What's new with you? Carol
P.S. No damage here from Hurricane Fay!

    Hi Claire,
I know I have not touched bases in a while. Guess I am spending more time reading and less time on Shefari.

How is your summer going? At least it has finally got to be warm there!

I have been traveling alot for work. Just got in from SC last night and leaving for South Beach, FL early Monday am. Looking forward to a four day weekend, even though I don't get in from FL until late Thursday.

I have a couple of vacations planned for July and August. Going to the beach and also to a lake house. Then we are taking a cruise to Alaska. So I am reading Mitchner's Alaska. Love to read his books prior to going to an area. I just wish they weren't so long!

Just finished reading Slammerkin. You might enjoy it as much as I did. About an 18th century prostitute in England. Very different. I learned about it from this site.

Guess I need to get dressed, get to the gym and start my weekend errands. Have put them off long enough.

Look forward to hearing from you.
