This is a nice list!
I really enjoyed The History of Love probably because I liked Leo Gursky so much. I plan on reading the Restoration and Merival this year.
I'll look forward to hearing your review, BB.
What a wonderful list!
Thanks you, Judith and Rina.
I've read two of the books on your list and thoroughly enjoyed them.
If the others are in a similar vein then they certainly are worth keeping in mind. Thank you.
Thanks for the list. We need more sunlit things in our lives.
Several have been read, several on the TBR! Wonderful list, I need some time in the sunshine.
The Enchanted April was a lovely book and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand was delightful. Based upon those two, I will have to explore some of the other of your choices for the list.
I love ENCHANTED APRIL, THE GUERNSEY LITERARY POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY, and I CAPTURE THE CASTLE. MAJOR PETTIGREW'S LAST STAND is on my nightstand waiting to be read. Thanks for the list, Story; I'll have to check some of the others out.
Hope you find some you like, Katrina. Have you ever watched the movie versions of EA and I Capture the Castle? Both quite delightful in their own way and slightly different from the book.
I've watched Enchanted April, but I didn't know there was one for for I Capture the Castle. I'll look it up. Thanks for telling me.
I've just finished Major Pettigrew.
What a sweet story. Thanks. :-)
I really liked that one. I liked how she handled some fairly dark issues (ageism, sexism, racism, fanaticism) with humour and a sense of hopefulness.
I am home sick and in the mood for comfort books. Great list! cold comfort, I capture the castle and Enchanted April are among my favourites. I also enjoyed Major Pettigrew and Guernsey Potato Pie and Far Cry from Kensington and I have read some Rose Tremain but not those.. so I have a lovely list of books to comfort me now! Thank you
Get well soon!
Hi, love this list I've read 5 or so books here and loved all of them, thank you for giving me some great ideas for my To Be Read section
Let me know if you can think of any other books in this vein. I'm always on the lookout for new reads!
Hmm possibly The Colour of Water, have you read that book? Written by a black journalist whose mother is white and his experience of that. Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill, The Healing by Jonathan Odell. Daniel Deronda by George Elliot, is ultimately life affirming, have you read it?
Hi, The Colour of Water, Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill, The Healing by Jonathan Odell, House Girl, are all in the end life affirming books, dealing with some sticky topics, racism, sexism but beautifully written and the human spirit triumphs in the end. Also the Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir about how the future Elizabeth the first managed to keep her head on and stay alive through two kings and a queen, not so sympathetic to her, how she managed to navigate the political and religious changing tides in the turbulent times is a terrific well written story. Daniel Deronda by George Elliot another triumph. Let me know what you think.
Thanks Mercedes, I'll check them out!
