Hello,

My Name is Ben, and I am from North Carolina, USA. I am now semi-retired, having served 10 years in the Army, and the remaining years in management. I have no idea as to how many books I have read, many were forgetable, many were wonderful. Some of those books are on my shelve.

About my shelf: Not all the books I have... more »

I'm very sorry for your loss and your grandson's accident; those events take the starch out of a person, don't they? I escape by reading--
We're, sadly, at an age for sad things to come our way; I lost a long-time friend (over 50 years) a couple of weeks ago. And it seemed like every Christmas card I got had some new report of illness or something....
Hope your energy and positive outlook picks up with spring--altho the winter has been pretty spring-like, hasn't it?
Don't rush for The Death of Kings--lots of politics, not much action. And he's getting older, too.

Ben, I'm eager for you to read the latest Uhtred novel....but I see you've taken up with the Normans. We went from England to France a few years ago, across the channel, at about the same time of year as William. My imagination soared. We also had visited the site of the battle just before--it was so interesting, great interpretation. and then went to Bayeaux to see the tapestry...Did not stop in Caen, but I think it was pretty much destroyed in WWII, to see the graves of William and his wife, Matiilda?.

Hi Ben. Just read your review of The Conquest. I had a little bit of a higher opinion of it then you did (I gave it four stars). Just thought I should warn you that The Conquest is more reflective of Chadwick's novels than The Greatest Knight is, especially her earlier works. Her historical detail is fantastic, especially when it comes to how people lived, what they ate and wore, etc, but most of her works only feature the political-type history of the time period in the background rather than the forefront like The Greatest Knight did. I enjoy her stuff because I like her characters and their storylines, and because Chadwick does a fabulous job of creating a strong sense of time and place, but if you're looking for novels that feature more detail on historical events Chadwick is probably not the best choice. Stick with Penman :-)

Thanks for the note. I've been a reader of his Sharp series for years. I'm reading the Fort currently and really enjoying the multimedia files attached to the Kindle version on my iPad.

Throroughly enjoying Dances. I'd put my name on the waiting list at the library and my moment came. I happily put aside everything else. I confess to reading all of the names at the start of the chapters and being a little dismayed by the fact that some names aren't showing up. Just not in this book? Dead? You never know with Martin.

I like but don't love Brooks' books. I definitely think I'll read People of the Book. (Missed your answer to my post a month ago so am belated responding to it and will seek out your blip.)

Yes been a while. Need to come here more often as much as I read. I have been reading alot more these past few months. I had almost forgotten how much I love a good written story.

I quite liked it, because it was set in an area I like. It's been a while since I've read it though.

Interested in seeing what you think of People of the Book. A lot of people think it's Brooks' best work.

I see you have added Pale Rose of England. I was in the minority with my rating of 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed the book but others found it too romantic which I didn't. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts when you read it.

I saw your rating of 3 stars for Mists of Avalon. I loved that book. I do know most men aren't real fond of that story. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

Ben, y ou might be interested in a Civil War book (I confess written by my cousin John Corley, a retired career army soldier) called A House Divided. It is a time-travel book: a contemporary man finds himself in pre-CW Virginia, with the ability to change history AND a killer on his heels. My cuz love Robert E Lee, and tell the tale from a Confederate point of view. It's his first novel, but he knows his military history and everything about RE Lee.

I thought it could have been because of it being very expensive quite a few years ago.
Luckily now university is way more accessible. Also because nowadays if you haven't got a degree, you won't really do anything! But that's good.

Hehe yeah, I like series too. Although I am trying to get out of it and just read books that sound interesting. I'm having quite a good success with that so far :)

I am on my summer break, yes. I got the results of my third year exams today (they were really good as everyone but one expected :D) and I am enjoying a good amount of laziness. Then on the 13th of July I'll start a placement at another university - it's Astronomy-related, so it should be good fun. And a good way to get some contacts in a new environment.
You are just working, I suppose? If so, what do you work as?

    Have a good weekend,
    Rick.
