You just go to the person's profile you want to add and there's a green bar in the upper right that says "Add so-and-so as your friend"
I added you as a friend, now all you have to do is accept. Basically, what I would say you should do is join some groups, add your book to their group reading list and promote the heck out of it.
My niece just loves this site I guess.
