Greetings! My name is Amanda, and I am a 22 year old student majoring in English and Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The current plan is to go into teaching after completing my undergrad, but I hold romantic notions of wanting to become a librarian. I'm living a very typical, unhealthy college existence, and am looking... more »

Hi Amanda. I just finished Annie's Ghosts. I am happy to be done with reading it but also equally happy that I read all the way through it. It was somewhat exasperating that he was so focused on whether his dad knew or not, but I suppose that gave credence to why his mom kept the secret from him in the first place. What I like the most about the book was the voice he gave to Annie, and the other 5,000, even though it was such a small amount. I know you said that you felt that was a hole in the book, but from the perspective of reading a number of holocaust memoirs, I imagine that he told as much about her as he could while still maintaining the integrity of a non-fiction book. I wonder what his mom would have said about the book. Oh, and I forgot to mention one other connection between us - you started Shelfari on my birthday! Thanks for answering me.

Hi Amanda. I don't usually send notes but we are reading the same book (Annie's Ghosts), I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (years ago) and am a librarian. There were too many connections to ignore. I am struggling with Annie's Ghosts because it is so depressing to think that someone at age 21 had no choices in her life that were under her control, so the reading is going in spurts. Hopefully you are having an easier time with it.
