Hello Alan. I have lived in Vancouver for several years before 1995 in Kits. Banyan Book Store was my favorite haunt. Wonder if it is still there. My novel - nude besides the lake- mentions it ( the title is besides, not beside and one has to read the book to find out why)

Is it hard to publish a book and have it put in storarers? I have always wanted to have a book published and have it get put in stores I just love to write my stomach gets really tight when I write I many good ideas for books I am going to write some day. Have you read or heard of the book hank the cowdog by john erickson? Hank the cowdog is no doubt about it is my favorite book. Sorry if I talk about writting alot it's just that I have never never ever talked to a real author before. In forth grade I did so good on a writting progect that my teacher thought I was cheating off the computer. In school we get to make a 8 page book and get it published and I am going to do it on a ficton story about 2 cats one male one female that are eatch in a tower on 9/11 and when the towers came down and fire fighters are looking for survivers they find 2 cats along with 12 new born kittens.
Can you give me any writting tipes? and sorry my pc wont let me put tabs.

Well if your humour appeals to the Aussie in me, then I'm sure it will appeal to the "Pom" in me; that's someone from England around these here parts, although for the life of me I don't know WHERE the nickname came from. Now that I've typed that it occurs to me that Google is my friend and I should find out the answer so I'll tag it on the end of this missive. I like to think that as a relocated English woman and a settler in Aus for all my adult life, that I've a double helping of a smarty britches (feel free to insert the term I refrained from typing), wise-cracking, poke fun at, sarcastic sense of humour, and I must admit that so called Hollywood 'comedies' leave me completely unmoved as I'm afraid I'm very scathing in calling them not only juvenile but puerile. Serve me up a dish of Blackadder, Death at a Funeral (the original English version), Fry and Laurie (that would be Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie from their stand-up days), some Monty Python most notable the Dead Parrot sketch as well as MP & the Holy Grail (it's just a flesh wound); and I'm quite sure a few drinks help with a lot of the latter somewhat stupid comedy (but it's not puerile at least LOL)! The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher is a firm shelf favourite amongst a cast of thousands, because the wisecracks (in the face of impending maiming or death), are now so intrinsic to the main character that all of us bibliphiles who read avariciously feel like we could sit down an have a bar (at Macs) and have a chat NO PROBLEMS (that would be an Aussie saying), never mind the books are also bloody well crafted (sorry I had to), and riveting.

I consider any book that makes me smile and both happy, cos I enjoyed it, and sad, cos I finished it, a triumph and a keeper.

As someone who averages 6+ books a week, I'm always greedy for me, in fact I'm a glutton for fiction.

Now the 100 mile beach query has thrown me somewhat, as I initial thought oh that's in Broome which is in the north-west of Western Australia - a mere 2415km drive from Perth, the capital city of Western Australia and can be accessed directly via the North West Coastal Highway... and yep, I looked it up to get the distance for you. There is SOME civilisation on the way, but there's an awful lot of nothing, not much, and woops was that a town on the way! I've never driven that far in a car, but have flown there and spent a lovely holiday at CABLE BEACH, the famous beach up there.

Back to 100 mile beach, hmm, well there's a 90 mile beach in Victoria, that's 1 day 18 hours straight driving without sleep Google maps tell me...to the closest town of Bairnsdale 3,804.5 km via the Eyre Hwy which goes west-east (or vice versa if you live in the other 'side' of the country), plus of course there's those 90 miles now isn't there.

So we both learned something didn't we :-). Dare I suggest if beautiful lonely - by that I mean not necessarily remote but away from cities - places appeal, then from what I know you are living in a pretty good example, and Perth would match that exactly too -- just replace lush and green which earth tones (the dirt is in fact red in a whole lot of places), with all the colours of greens, browns, ochres, oranges and yellows -- more so in the stinking heat -- then you might like to wander down these 'ere parts, it's quite something to behold.

Take care and I wish you a successful, happy and healthy 2012 for you and yours.

    Kind Regards
    Marie-Claude

Back to the ever so English small talk subject of weather, in fact we have so far had a very mild summer with only 3 or 4 days pushing 40 degree (that would be Celcius, whatever plus 100 it is in F). The weather is perfect at the moment, with glorious 30-34 C degree days, and pleasant weather at night for sleeping. As for snow, I haven't seen that since I was a child, and I can remember whining most pitifully when I went out with the big kids sledding (I have 2 older brothers and a sister), so much that my eldest brother had to take me home; and I got told off the entire way about how much of a nuisance I was!!! Ahh memories, but then I remember sitting in front of the fire warming up with a cup of hot chocolate; that is one of my strongest last memories before I left England - happy days.

That said, I wouldn't give up growing up in Australia for all the tea in England, and that's a hell of a lot of tea (which I drink copious amounts of), as this is a truly fabulous part of the world to live, with the only downside being the tyranny of distance.

And that juxtaposition describes so many aspects and joys in life don't you think?

My grown up kids are going out today for an all day musicfest held by what we call the 'foreshore' as the Swan River wends its way through and passed the doors of the CBD. It's being held for the first time there in South Perth (which is where it says on the opposite bank to the city, and has huge stretches of gorgeous green grass and gum trees (and other one's too...waves hand vaguely to suggest other trees), so at least they will only come back semi lobster, as it's only supposed to be around 33 today.

    Sheer bliss!
