“As a fan of Downton Abbey, a colleague knew I'd love this book, so she loaned it to me, and she was right! I did love it! I see how this book inspired the British TV series, "Upstairs, Downstairs" and later Downton Abbey. It was fascinating to get a real inside look at how life really was for the working class back at the turn of the century. Do I think students would like this book? Only mature female readers who are into history and/or British period shows or movies. ”

“This book was recommended by Allison Morris, Senior Editor of Scholastic Books, (if you haven't figured out yet, I take her advice on books) and I wasn't disappointed. I really wanted to read this because she said it takes place in Cornwall, England, and that is my dream place to live. My co-worker, Mrs. Hargrove, bought this for me after hearing that I wanted to read it. (Thank you, Bethanne!) I loved the story and enjoyed this book completely! It told the story of a girl whose mom disappeared the year before who finds an unusual friendship while helping to save a rare white dolphin. I would highly recommend this book to any reader in 6th grade who is a bit advanced and in for a great book! ”

“Yes, another book that my hero, Allison Morris, Senior Editor of Scholastic Books, recommended on her book talk and another one that didn't let me down! This one tells the story of a young girl who is sent to live as a foster child with the seemingly perfect family, the Murphys. Her character is one who I felt for, but at the same time, wanted to yell at her at times for the way she acted, while all of it was probably so realistic and true to nature for a child going through what she had gone through. I loved this book, and I've had many students read it and love it! Highly recommend this one for any middle school girl!”

This book told the story of a boy who has a horrible facial deformity, even after numerous corrective surgeries, who starts school for the first time in middle school. The book is narrated by him, by his classmates, and by his sister and her friend. Having the different perspectives tell the story really brought it to life and helped me think about the situation more openly. I was brought to tears more than once, and I really loved this book!”
