I am Audrey and I really love to read. Although, reading is hard sometimes since I am a student and time is hard to come by. Some of my most favorite books were written in the 1930s-1950s. I just love that era! Some of my hobbies are Sewing, Studying the Bible, Reading, Sketching, Writing, Watching old movies, Listening to music, Painting,... more »

  • Book of Job

    Book of Job

    by King James Version
    • Rated 5 stars

I read the book of Job which is a compilation of event written by Job about his tumultuous life. I was interested to read this because I have been meaning to for such a long while, but I became very much interested in reading it after seeing it on a list of influential literary works. I was surprised by this because although I know it was very important in the religious world, I had not thought that it was so important in the world of literature. Another reason why I wanted to read it was because I have always heard of the expression “the patience of Job,” and of course I knew the overall story about Job, but I certainly did not know the extent of suffering he went through with all of his friends bashing him for paragraphs at a time, and even his own wife thinking he had sinned terribly. It really got me angry after awhile with how awful his life was and how he kept wishing to die, but, of course, there was a greater moral to the very saddening story. This is certainly not something you would want to read if feeling a little depressed one day, this is not the pick-me-up story in any way, shape, or form. After reading it in the King James Version, I found that there are many authors such as Stephen Mitchell who have translated it into modern English, but I myself much prefer the old standard. It took me a few days to read this.

This truly is one of the best books I have ever read. I don't think that there is any book just like it. The emotions that it gives the reader are simply amazing. I felt that the reader is able to truly relate and understand the character more than any others. Every single thing is so unexpected and yet the reader feels that it is all possible. I think that the main message of this book is that if you follow the path which is set for you without any uncertainty or looking back the right thing will always happen and you will always be shown what you must do. Once you begin reading this book it simply cannot be put down. Every time I started to read it I could not put it down, I had to see what was going to happen next. This work has every emotion that you could possibly have: it has sorrow, contentedness, devastation, blissfulness, torment, chaos, and utter joy. You name it and it is in there. I cannot say enough about this book. I will forever hold this book as one of the most influential books I have ever read. Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from the book: "May you never appeal to Heaven in prayers so hopeless and as agonized as in that hour left my lips: for never may you, like me, dread to be the instrument of evil to what you wholly love." (Volume the Second Chapter XXVII) “Humility, Jane,” said he, “is the groundwork of Christian virtues: you say you are not fit for the work. Who is fit for it? Or who, that ever was truly called, believed himself worthy for the summons?” (Volume the second Chapter XXXIV) "Come to my side, Jane, and let us explain and understand one another." "I will never again come to your side: I am torn away now, and cannot return." "But, Jane, I summon you as my wife: it is you only I intend to marry." I was silent: I thought he mocked me."Come, Jane – come hither.""Your bride stands between us." He rose, and with a stride reached me. "My bride is here," he said, again drawing me to him, "because my equal is here, and my likeness. Jane, will you marry me?" (Volume the Second Chapter XXIII)
There are tons and tons more which I love just as much, but these are just a couple that I really like.

  • Wait for Marcy (Marcy Rhodes Series)
    • Rated 5 stars

I love this book! Marcy Rhodes is such a sweet girl, and yet she has a lot of spunk too. This is definitely a great book for any teenager to read especially if you love to read books from the 40s and 50s. Marcy is definitely someone who is coming out of her shell and is trying to figure out what life is all about. I think that a lot of girls feel this way when they have never had a boyfriend before. I think that we can understand what is going through Marcy's head because everyone is always experiencing new things and just the whole idea of growing up. As we see Marcy grow up we see how family is one of the most important parts of her life and that family is something you can always hang onto even when friends are not there.

This is such a devastating book. I have to say that it was not my favorite Beany book. I think that in many ways Mrs. Weber should have stopped with Something Borrowed, Something Blue. I think that leaving our thoughts open to what might have gone on after she got married wold have been a better ending to the story instead of this terribly sad thing which happens. In many ways I would have wanted to take this book and A Bright Star Falls out of the series. These were two of the saddest books I have ever read especially since I feel so connected with the characters. I won't give anything away, but I think that her losing these two people was almost like losing a family member because Beany always cared with her whole heart and not just because they were friends. Everyone was family to Beany even if they were someone she only met once, but unfortunately this girl was much closer than that.

  • Hamlet
    • Rated 5 stars

What an amazing play! It is probably not my most favorite Shakespeare work, but I can definitely appreciate this priceless writing of Shakespeare. Since I have read other Shakespeare, it was somewhat predictable for me how everyone would die in the end and life would just end terribly for everyone. I was really sad when Ophelia died. I thought that there might be at least one little good thing that might happen with maybe Hamlet at least having a little bit more love with her. I guess that that is only one tragedy among all of the other tragedies that happen in this play. I think that Hamlet is one of the most quotable of many of his plays because it seems like every monologue had some sort of important meaning to it. It seems that especially in the beginning there were so many things that were said which felt like people might quote it a lot. This is a play which everyone must read multiple times in their lives.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. Through Dickens' genius, he is able to create a feeling that is so amazing and a story that affects a person's life so much.

This is another book in the Beany Malone series. Beany has really grown up since the beginning of the series and she shows her strength through all of the lives she continues to affect through her good hearted ways. We learn a lot about Beany's childhood in this book and how she used to have so much fun with her old friend Miggs who lives with her wealthy family and who Beany has not seen for ages. With Beany turning seventeen this book is very special to me since I am turning seventeen myself this summer. It is so neat because Beany is turning seventeen on March 17 and she is Irish. I suppose this is no coincidence. Part of the reason why Beany wants to fins Miggs is because she too was born on the same day and she wants to sort of recreate that time in her life when her mother was alive. I think that this is definitely a book to wait and read. You first must read the other books so as to get the full story of Beany's life. I just love Beany so much and I recommend this book to everyone! It is probably my most favorite series ever.

  • Someone to Count On
    • Rated 5 stars

I love this book so much. Of course anything written by Rosamond du Jardin is a work of art and is always very heart warming and full of a sense of just plain fun with not many super serious problems. I like to read books where the problems are not huge but are just normal every day life problems. Twink, the main character of the story, is a junior in high school yet very mature which I like. She is such a nice character who doesn't find problems in everything she does but rather has fun with life even when it throws a curve ball at her.

  • Make a Wish for Me
    • Rated 5 stars

I love this book so much! Of course Beany Malone is one of my most favorite characters ever so I suppose I am biased. In this book, Beany is trying to decide between Norbett and Andy which makes things a little scary at times and a little undecided, but thankfully it feels as though she is leaning in the right direction for the right boy. Someone who is added into the mix who causes quite a bit of conflict is Dulcie. At first it felt like Dulcie was not a very good person, but we do learn later that she is not all bad just as Beany is always able to find in people even if it means feeling a lot of dislike for them. In being friends with Dulcie, this causes problems in school because everyone hates Dulcie because of her crazy and many times selfish ways. We find though that Beany is able to make everything right and things turn out for the better, but along the way it feels pretty bad and as though the worst could go wrong as it does in many instances.

  • Purgatorio
    • Rated 2 stars

I did not really enjoy this book very much. I thought that it might be interesting since I enjoyed some of the Inferno. The main reason that I read it though was so that I could find out what happened next in Dante's journey. I will be glad to go onto Paradiso which I hope has a slightly happier feeling to it as I am sure it will since it is heaven. In this book, it felt that Dante's journey was sort of uneventful and there was not much going on. I felt that Dante could have made it more interesting by having more of a plot to it because in the Inferno it felt more that way. I think that it is interesting to see what Dante believes happens to the people in Purgatory though even though there is no such thing as this or at least I do not believe this. I think that he is a little to harsh on the sinners in here because yes some of them did some really bad things but if he thinks that this is better than hell I would beg to differ with him. There are many moments where the punishments felt so unfair and I felt were not right for the sins they committed. Let's hope heaven is better according to Dante.
