I am always amazed when I look at your list in the 100+ Reading Challenge. As if the numbers you post aren't enough, the content of the books you read is absolutely astonishing. No light reads for you! I am in awe of you. :)

You've changed your photo again. I think it was the sepia tint of your previous photo that gave it a surreal, slightly menacing look.

    Zero,

Your picture looks kind of spooky; kind of Jekyll-to-Hyde... We watched the 1941 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the other night on TCM. Spencer Tracy was awesome, and the special effects were amazingly good for the time. Have you been experiencing any black-outs and lost time episodes lately?

You've read a few books lately that you didn't like. What gives?

I'm glad to hear that you are finding Travels worthwhile--I will read that as well. Winter of our Discontent is fascinating--I'm sensing some serious bitterness. I read quite a bit of Dos Passos a few years ago, and I am getting a very similar vibe from Winter. I wonder how close the publication of Dos Passos' Midcentury was to Winter--I think there is a similarity of tone.

I get your point on Updike and DeLillo their most recent novels were awful (pace Updike!), but I think Roth is more substantive. I haven't yet read his new book, but it at least looks serious.

Did you happen to catch the Washington Post article last week? It talks about Steinbeck's late works, and how works like Winter of our Discontent and America and the Americans are much more relevant now than Grapes of Wrath, which people are picking up again. Article at: http://bit.ly/18boan

So what's the new picture about, Zero? Ringing in the New Year, turning over a new leaf? Looks like you're playing peek-a-boo. Good god, man, you read a lot of books.

Zero, I looked at your shelf and at the books we have in common. I am very impressed. You seem to also have an appreciation for the dark and existential. I have not seen many people with Woman In The Dunes on their shelf. -Julie

Thanks very much for that recommendation, I'm going to read it next. Happy you liked Master of Go. I loved the simple blending of reality and artifice in that one.

    Hi Zero,

I see you are planning to read Jane Eyre. I am currently reading this wonderful book and highly recommend it. How on earth do you find time to read so many books? I am jealous!

Well, it certainly is a remarkable accomplishment, regardless of whether or not you reach your 2007 goal.

Hey, thanks for responding. To be honest, I think I'm more awed than curious. What has motivated your prodigious undertaking? Will you continue reading at this rate into 2009?

    Zero,

I'd like to ask you an aesthetic question. You apparently are reading a complete book every two days or so in order to achieve a goal of 200 books in 2008 (or whatever your target is). Do you ever read at a pace more conducive to savoring a book? Is your reading pleasure diminished by the rapid rate at which you are reading? Just curious. I've never read at such an accelerated rate and don't know that I could.

Yeah, loved it. Very funny and captivating, a nice few days curled up in front of the pellet stove. Though I kind of sped through the third epoque, didn't hold me as much during his wrap up. How are you enjoying The Namesake? I might read that after the ones I'm into now.

my cutting room floor list is in no particular order, as it states. i find atlas shruggeed to be a sweet love story between some very silly people, but that is neither here nor there to the point about libertarians
